When I was pregnant with my second child, I started thinking differently about work.

We’d largely be working to pay for childcare — and someone else would be raising our daughter while she’s still little.
That’s not a trade I’m willing to make.
But I also didn’t want to accept our setup as permanent. The responsibility of being the only income — for all of us — was starting to feel heavy in a way I couldn’t ignore.
So instead of wondering how I’d transition back from maternity leave, I started wondering if I could build a way out.
Not to escape responsibility. To have more control over it.
What “Work Optional” Actually Means to Me
I’m not trying to get rich. I’m not trying to retire at 35. What I want is simpler — and honestly harder to find.
I want both my husband and me to be work optional. Not unemployed. Not checked out. Just free to choose. Here’s what that actually looks like in my head:
- Some days I’m focused on building my business while he has time to pursue things that bring him joy — not just the things that need to get done
- Other days I’m present with my kids while he handles what he’s working on
- We’re taking turns instead of one person carrying everything
- I’m there for my son after school and actually present with my daughter while she’s still a baby
- I have enough breathing room to exercise, practice self-care, and go for a walk with my family just because we can
That’s what I’m building toward. Not one big moment. Just a life that feels less squeezed.
I Don’t Think Women Are Actually Choosing Between Career and Family
Years ago, a manager told me something that’s stuck with me ever since: “You can’t have it all.”
The implication was clear — you can have a career, or you can have time with your family. Choose one.
At the time, I accepted that. Now I’m not so sure.
Today’s reality feels even harder than it did then:
- Inflation has stretched family budgets to the breaking point
- Daycare costs rival a second mortgage in many places
- Layoffs happen with little warning
- AI is changing expectations at work almost overnight
The answer we’re given? Learn more. Produce more. Be available more. But nobody gives us more hours. That’s the real problem.

People usually think the biggest obstacle to starting a business is money. That wasn’t true for me. The biggest obstacle was time.
I’d tried blogging before. I’d explored other side hustles. I’d spent weeks on:
