How To Write Product Reviews With No Products To Review

How To Write Product Reviews With No Products To Review

Product reviews are one of the best ways to drive traffic to your website. People are searching for millions of things every day that they need answers to. Especially when it comes to learning about a product before they buy it.

But what if you don’t own the products that you want to review? How could you possibly write a review on a product that you’ve never seen, used or touched. You know darn well that you know nothing about it so why should you attempt to do this?

Time To Go Back To School

Well, let me ask you this...

How do you learn about something you know nothing about? You are either taught by someone who knows more than you do or you take it upon yourself to do independent research and self-study. Isn't this what are are doing pretty much every time we do an online search? We are trying to find information and educate ourselves on a particular issue.

How to do Product Research

You probably had no idea how to change the oil in your vehicle unless someone showed you how or you found a video on YouTube showing you the exact steps. But once you learned how to do it, you could call yourself a bit of an expert on how to change your own oil.

If someone asked you how to do it, you most certainly could explain to them what they need to do since you’ve already learned this major life lesson.

The same is true when it comes to product reviews. Even if you do not own the product or have never used it, you can still educate yourself and become knowledgeable without having to purchase the product you want to review.

In the world of affiliate marketing, there just isn’t enough time or money to own and personally evaluate everything on your own. You’re going to need to find some creative ways to provide honest and credible reviews without your own personal or first-hand experience with it.

How to Find Product Information

Just like you had no idea about how to change your oil before someone taught you, consider the product that you want to review as your vehicle that needs an oil change. You will need to either learn how to do it from someone who has personal experience with it or you will have to educate yourself and learn it on your own.

Use Your Personal Network

Seek out family, friends and co-workers and simply ask the if they know anything about Product X. You can reach out to them via your social media platforms and open up your potential experience pool to the number of connections you have. There’s a good chance someone will have personal experience with the product or know someone who has.

This is an excellent resource for finding information since it allows you to leverage hundreds of potential users very easily and quickly.

Do Some Online Shopping

Where would we be without the power and convenience on online searches? I was once told that if you can’t find what you’re looking for from an online search, it’s not important and you don’t need it!

That is very true and is spot on when it comes to learning about any product. Simply search for the product you want to review and start educating yourself about it! Read about its features, its uniqueness, its cost and compare this to other similar products in the same category.

One of the best places to find honest review information is from the comments on Amazon. Look at the ratings and user reviews and see what people like and what they don’t like. Understand why folks are giving it a 5-star review versus a 2-star review.

By simply clicking on each star rating category, you can see what real consumers and actual product owners are saying about the product. Try to look for products that have at least a few hundred reviews as you will acquire better information from a larger sample size of consumers.

Amazon Product Review Rating

Make a list of the pros and cons and use this as your talking points during your review. Just remember not to plagiarize the comments. Put them in your own words just as you would if you had to explain to someone about how to change your oil.

Tap Into Social Media

Similar to the information you can obtain from reading Amazon review comments, you can also find some very good product feedback on most social media platforms.

Try searching in Pinterest, Instagram and Twitter and see what you can find. The results may surprise you as there is usually a ton of very good, valid information available.

User Groups and Forums

If a particular product does not have its own dedicated user group, you can browse independent groups and forums found online. This is an excellent way to see what the online community thinks about the product.

Say for example your niche is camping equipment and you are reviewing a certain make and model of backpack. Chances are you can find a lot of information about exactly the same product by joining online camping or hiking forums and asking questions about the product.

Quora for Product Reseach

People are all too happy to help and provide their input, especially if they have first-hand knowledge about the product. If they love it, they will tell you exactly why they love it and provide details about the features they like most. The same is true if they don't like it. They will typically give you all the reasons why they don't like it and will most likely offer up a product they like better.

Bonus! Now you have a different product to review or another product to add to your review list. Before you know it, you will have a full portfolio of products in the same niche with tons of useful information that you can use to write your review on.

Online Store Sites

If the product is sold in more than one place, visit the online stores look at the customer comments. Although Amazon tends to be one of the more popular online stores, don’t forget about places like Walmart, Target, eBay, Shopify, Kohls and Best Buy.

All of these sites have customer feedback areas and will serve as an excellent source of real-user feedback that you can use to learn about what consumers like and don’t like about the product.

The Product Website

The main product website is a great learning resource as they tend to be the most knowledgeable of the product and its features. Duh! Of course they are! They are not going to be highlighting any negatives about the product, but it still serves as one of the most valuable resources for learning what the product is all about.

And this is the best place to start when you know absolutely nothing about a product since the information on their website is designed to educate and ‘sell’ to the potential consumer. You will find everything you need to in short order.

Many times they will have a self-service support portal as part of the main site. Take a look at the issues people are having and read through the comments. This will give you a very good understanding of the types of issues that may exist with product and if they are a common product defect or just an anomaly.

Learning how responsive a company is with support is a very good indication of how the company treats their customers. It's one thing to have issues with a product. We all know nothing is perfect. But if the company is responsive and tries to resolve the issues in a timely manner, that says a lot about the product and the company that represents it.

Buy the Product and Test It Yourself

The best way to provide a product review is to buy the product, try it out and then report on what you like and don’t like and why.

I know the title of this article is about not owning the product, but I’m going to cheat just a little bit because nothing can beat personal experience and knowledge of the product.

On the other hand, it just doesn’t make sense for anyone to buy all the products they plan on reviewing from a financial or time perspective. You would go broke in the process and not have any time to actually write your reviews because you would be spending the majority of your time trying them out!

That being said, you don’t want to base all of your product reviews on other people's opinions or experiences. It’s strongly recommended that you pick and choose what products you want to own and evaluate while building your product review strategy.

Here’s a little secret…

Reach out to the product owner and ask them if they will send you a complimentary product for you to review. Let them know you are an affiliate marketer and that you want to feature their product on your website.

The Secret to Getting Free Products

Reach out to the product owner and ask them if they will send you a complimentary product for you to review. Let them know you are an affiliate marketer and that you want to feature their product on your website.

It’s very common that they will happily send you their products for you to evaluate. Especially if they know they are good. They will be receiving some free marketing and will most likely you will generate some sales for them. So it’s a win-win for them.

Plus, they realize you are probably going to do the review on their product anyway. So why would they risk upsetting you and the possibility of you giving them a less than perfect review? So it’s always a very good idea to just reach out and ask. They may even send you more than you ask for so it’s a win-win for you too!

I've Got The Product Info, Now What?

Now that you've acquired the product information you need to write your review, what next?

If you are familiar with doing product reviews, you probably have a standard procedure or writing template that you use. If you don’t, you should.

Especially if you are going to be doing a lot of reviews. Not only is it a huge time saver but it will help tremendously with your credibility as a writer since readers will come to expect a certain style from you.

There is an excellent product review article written at AuthoryHackers.com that gives  guidelines for writing the perfect product review. I strongly recommend you take a look at it and incorporate their recommendations into your product review template.

But at the very minimum, you want to make sure that you discuss the problem and how the product solves that problem. Your readers want to know why they should purchase this product (hopefully through your affiliate link) and they are looking to you to tell them yes or no and why or why not.

So outline the problem and tell them if the product solves the problem.

If it does, explain how. If it doesn’t, explain why not.

Then just summarize your findings and provide your final recommendation.

Lather, rinse, repeat...

Final Thoughts

Product reviews are one the best ways to drive organic traffic to your website because people are always searching for solutions to problems they are having. They are an excellent way for you to incorporate your affiliate links into the products you recommend and divert potential buyers away from products you don’t and over to the ones you do.

It would be great if we had the money to buy all of the products we want to review and the time required to review them all. But based on the amount of content that is going to be required on your site, this is not possible.

This doesn’t mean you can’t review products if you don’t own them. Just follow the steps discussed in this article and you can still present yourself as a trusted and credible source of information. Your readers will greatly appreciate it!
